Yes, the PS3 and its line of software have been making Sony a lot of money for quite a while, but the actual consoles themselves have been sold at a loss up until this year.
Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony's Worldwide Studios, told IGN, "We aren't making huge money from hardware, but we aren't bleeding like we used to." Smaller and more cost effective graphics chips seem to be the culprit. Either that, or whatever they yanked such that the PS3 is effectively a brick to my PS2 games made the difference.
