Soon to be 13-year old MMO goes free to play The Free-To-Play MMO used to be a trend that only Japanese made MMO’s added in to get players to play their games. Today it seems like every MMO under the sun, with the exceptions of EVE online and The Old Republic, are treating the free-to-play strategy as a normal concept or at least has some type of free to play component.
EverQuest, one of the oldest and most popular MMO’s of all time, is about to jump on the free-to-play ship as well.
A letter posted on the Sony Station website by Thom Terrazas, the producer of Everquest states that “After listening to your feedback and suggestions over the past few years, I'm happy to announce that in early March 2012, EverQuest will be going free-to-play.” Coincidentally the game turns 13 on March 16th as well.
Of course that doesn’ t mean that you’ll be getting “everything” for free. Anyone who has ever played a “free-to-play” MMO knows that there is always a catch. There will be two types of subscriptions, silver and free, as well as many other perks that come from spending some dough.
Thom Terrazas says that this new version of the game will allow you to customize it however you want so that you pay as much or as little as you like. There's no word on how this will effect game balance or if there will be items that significantly strengthen players who pay over plays that don't.
EverQuest was the MMO to play before World of Warcraft came about and still has a few fans, but not many, playing today. It will be interesting to see how many old players come back and if the name has enough star power to draw new players in.
